Monday, 30 JuneNew worksite overview: Take a look at this latest panorama. For a comparison over time, visit the basic westerly view page.
Thursday, 26 JuneIt's Movie Day! Contributor "M.S.S." sends in two movies of recent events. Visit the movies page to view them. Fire and falling towers make great action!
Wednesday, 25 JuneWhile the workers are closing in on the finish line for Bldg 5, now is a good time to catch up on some more assorted photos. Crews have been busy "planting" little pipes all around the open areas. The ceiling crane (or at least parts of it) is still visible inside Bldg 5. And honorable mention goes to the rectangular "process tank" structure that has kept the godzillas at bay. Each layer takes hours to remove, and each time, there is another beneath it! It looks like the toughest resistance yet met by the team. As always, you can view the slide show or examine individual pictures below.

Tuesday, 24 JuneReader "M.S.S." wrote: I also have a couple of pictures of the dump truck that tipped sideways while back-filling one of the Bldg.3 dig sites. They used one of the tractor trucks to right the dump truck. The dump truck ended up with a flat tire and was out of action for the day. Thanks for the story and the photos! Monday, 23 JuneThe north end of Bldg 5 is just beginning to come down. Last Friday they removed the stairwell tower from the NE corner of the building, began chewing on the facade, and generally ripped open a huge section of the east wall. View the slide show or examine individual pictures below:

In the five months since the exterior panels of Bldg 3 began to be removed, much has happened. But much more work remains. Buildings 3, 8, 9, 17, and most of 5 have been removed. The map shows that only a small fraction of the buildings are done:
Friday, 20 JuneToday brings a grab bag of images. There are huge chunks of equipment laying about the work site waiting their turn to be chopped up and hauled away. Please note that the yellow tank in the lower left photo (west view) is the same yellow tank as in the lower right photo (south view).
Thursday, 19 JuneOver the last month things have definitely changed for Bldg 5. Compare the picture taken on June 16 (top) with the one taken on May 12. The entire east (low/old) section of the building is now missing. The west (high/new) section is halfway gone.
Wednesday, 18 JuneFire Update: There was no mention of Monday's fire in the Long Beach Press-Telegram, or any other news source as far as we can tell. Reader "M.S.S." sent in these photos taken from a higher vantage point than seen in yesterday's update. Thanks for the contribution!
According to the Press-Telegram, "economics may stall the PacifiCenter buildout". This P-T article popped up while we were searching for some news of the fire. The link is not guaranteed to stick around, so if you would like to read it, now is the time. Tuesday, 17 JuneFIRE! A short-lived but spectacular fire erupted behind Bldg 5 on Monday. Witnesses reported hearing a loud boom just after 8:30 a.m., followed by a rush of very thick black smoke. The fire department was on scene in a few minutes, and the fire was extinguished after about 15 minutes. The pictures below show that the fire was already starting to clear up even as the fire engines arrived. These photos were taken too late to capture the dark, initial smoke but do give an idea of the location. Carson Street was promptly blocked off by the police department, so no closer photos were allowed. The final photo in the series shows a stack that is charred or scorched. Compare this photo with one taken on Friday. If you witnessed this event and can shed more details, please send in your story or photos. You can be credited or remain anonymous.
Site Notes: In an effort to streamline things, especially for our dialup users, we are changing the home page a bit. The big 1970s aerial view of the plant has been moved to the Odds & Ends page. It has been replaced with the most recent daily update, for faster download times. The What's New page will contain the last week's worth of updates and the remainder of the archives will be accessible though the archives index page. Like it? Hate it? Let us know! Monday, 16 JuneNew Panorama: Building 5 as of Friday, June 13: Click on the picture for a larger image, or go to the Building 5 panorama page for historical comparison and more options.

Wednesday, 11 JuneEyes on the Future: If you haven't visited the PacifiCenter @ Long Beach web site recently, please take a look today. It has been completely renovated and is now chock-full of new information and has some nice historical photos as well. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it looks gorgeous! Eyes on the Past: We offer the following photo as a remembrance of the way things used to be. If you have an idea of when this undated photo was taken, or what types of aircraft grace the flight line, please let us know. The image is available in JPEG format (156 KB) for fastest downloads or the original TIFF format (860 KB) for a wee bit more detail. Check back tomorrow for more Bldg 5 news. Long Beach Aerial View Tuesday, 10 JuneThe "West Wing" of Building 5 started to yield yesterday. Take a look at the following sequence of photos. It took the better part of an hour of intermittent pulling with two excavators working together to get the corner peeled away. Bldg 5 is tough!
Monday, 09 JuneThe crews still have not started to take down the external shell of the "high" (west/new) wing of Bldg 5. The bobcats are running in and out all day long removing internal materials, but the outside still looks the same as last week. As a thank you for visiting, we have posted two new movies on the Movies page. If you have trouble downloading them, please send us an email. Friday, 06 JuneLink of the Day: Visit the DC-3 Hangar for hundreds (probably thousands) of pictures of DC-3s and C-47s. You can download sounds of those great radial engines rumbling, read entertaining stories and even sign up for flight training! Surf over to http://www.douglasdc3.com today! Thursday, 05 JuneMost of the visible work this week has been cleaning up the debris from the east wing of Bldg 5. Truckload after truckload of steel, wood, concrete, and other materials are hauled away. There are just a few new pictures:
Wednesday, 04 JuneMidweek Extra: This L-1011 is suffering the same ignominious fate as Bldg 5! The PDF file (1.7 MB) shows the salvaging of a Lockheed L-1011 using the same type of "godzilla" machines that are currently chewing up the Douglas plant. Other than that, it really has nothing to do with the demolition or history of Douglas Long Beach. If anyone knows the author of the file, or any other details, please drop us a line so that he or she can be properly credited. Click on the picture: L1011Death.pdf (1.7 MB) Monday, 02 JunePlease read the Disclaimers Page if you haven't done so already. Here are the latest views. The "low" part of Bldg 5 is almost completely down. See the difference between May 28th and June 1st. New Panoramas:
